FG Greenlights Historic NYSC Overhaul with Tech-Driven Call-Up and Skills Focus
The Federal Executive Council has approved the first comprehensive review of the National Youth Service Corps in its 53-year history. The reform aims to preserve the Scheme’s legacy while preparing corps members for a fast-changing world. Key changes include a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployments, and a redesigned six-week orientation centred on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and specialised career streams. Corps members will be matched to skills-based primary assignments aligned with their academic backgrounds. Governance will shift to a civilian leadership structure supported by military security, and camp standards will be raised through a national grading and certification system. The overhaul also introduces a new graduation ceremony in place of the Passing Out Parade and updates the NYSC uniform to reflect professionalism and national pride. The reform journey began in 2025 with a multi-stakeholder review and now has formal endorsement. The Attorney-General and the Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to give these reforms legal effect.
