Gas Supply Boost Lifts Nigeria’s Electricity Generation to 4,300MW

Gas Supply Boost Lifts Nigeria’s Electricity Generation to 4,300MW

Nigeria’s electricity generation climbed from 3,951MW to 4,300MW between March 28 and April 10, the Federal Government announced. The boost came as gas supply to power plants rose from around 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704mmscfd. This improved plant performance and raised operational capacity from 4,208MW to 4,694MW. A Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee has been set up to improve coordination and resolve delivery issues. The Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency will expand meter testing centres and partner with NAPTIN to train more installers. President Tinubu approved a N3.3 trillion plan to clear decade-old power sector debts in phases. Some Nigerians, including a former state governor, question whether past funding will finally bring stable supply.

I doubt that extra capacity alone will fix erratic supply or cut costs for SMEs without better transmission and maintenance.

Increasing gas supply by roughly 100 mmscfd did lift generation, but transmission losses and billing issues often still hold output below consumer demand.

I'm not convinced that a short-term jump from 3,951MW to 4,300MW solves long-term reliability issues in our power sector.

To keep generation above 4,000MW, regulators could encourage consistent gas delivery schedules and monitor daily supply rates to power stations.
