Gateway Snooker Organisers Secure Royal Blessing from Olowu Ahead of 2nd Edition

Gateway Snooker Organisers Secure Royal Blessing from Olowu Ahead of 2nd Edition — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Afolabi Roseline Bolanle, convener of the Gateway Snooker Tournament, led the organising committee to Abeokuta on April 29. They met Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola to inform him of the competition taking place June 4–7 at Ijeja Sports Centre and to seek his support. The team highlighted last December’s debut event, which drew 32 top players including a Guinness World Record holder, and created business opportunities for local youths in gaming centres and pool accessories. Ruby noted that the second edition will welcome national and international players, with registration now open at a fee of ₦100,000. The Ogun State Ministry of Sports and the state government have pledged full backing. Prize money ranges from ₦2 million for the winner down to consolation awards for quarter-finalists. Oba Matemilola praised the initiative for engaging youths positively and boosting tourism and commerce in Ogun. He and his chiefs pledged continued support and confirmed he will attend the event in June.

How do we know a royal nod can really sway attendance or local sponsorship here?

It's interesting they sought Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola's support, but will that really boost event visibility beyond ceremonial value?

I'm not convinced that royal endorsement alone can improve player turnout or infrastructure at Ijeja Sports Centre.

They should use this royal backing to secure equipment sponsors and upgrade the snooker tables before the June 4–7 competition.
