Remember These Classic 80s & 90s Nigerian Childhood Games?

Good evening and happy Sunday, Sir/Ma! If you played any of these games, you’re likely in your late 30s, 40s or older. I still recall Boju Boju (hide and seek in Yoruba), Ten Ten with its clapping and leg swings, and Suwe where we hopped through ten chalked boxes to claim our house. Kite flying tested our patience, Who Sabi Swim Water let us mime strokes in a human chain, Koso was all about spinning pen caps and battery covers, and My Name Sweet O had us guessing who pinched whom under a chorus of “My name sweet o.” Most of these childhood plays are now extinct. Our children barely know them because technology changed everything. What games did you grow up with? Share your memories so we can honour the old school and see who truly deserves the Sir or Ma title!

I swear Suwe had me hopping like crazy every afternoon, pure fun with pals!

Did you lean more towards ball games like Boju Boju or the chalk patterns of Suwe?

Funny how we all claim Suwe or Ten Ten as our best, though I doubt everybody really mastered those tricky leg swings back then.

I've seen many teenagers learn those games in school sporting events, so that age assumption seems off to me.

To relive those memories with your own children, try chalking out a Suwe board on your driveway; it's simple and keeps everyone active.
