Children’s Day: Atiku Advocates Education Funding as Experts Demand Online Child Protection
As Nigeria marks Children’s Day alongside Eid-ul-Adha, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reminded leaders that investing in education is vital for a secure future. He urged Nigerians to keep children safe in schools, busy with books, and dreaming big through better funding of their learning. Public health experts at a webinar hosted by Gatefield and a child advocacy foundation warned of rising online abuse. They highlighted gaps in Nigerian laws and platform safeguards, noting that 89% of children have faced cyber risks like bullying, exploitation, and exposure to harmful content. They called on the Senate to urgently pass the Child Online Protection Bill. The Amazing Grace Children Rights Foundation raised alarm over more than 100 student abductions this month, including mass kidnappings in Oyo, Borno, Katsina, and Zamfara. The group urged the government to secure the release of captive children and end attacks that threaten Nigeria’s future.
