Ighalo Predicts Senegal Won’t Hand Over AFCON 2025 Trophy After Controversial CAF Ruling

Ighalo Predicts Senegal Won’t Hand Over AFCON 2025 Trophy After Controversial CAF Ruling

Former Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo says Senegal are unlikely to return the 2025 AFCON title after CAF stripped them in favour of Morocco. He told Brila FM that the decision to award Morocco the trophy months after the final has set African football back five steps. Ighalo criticised the referee’s handling of the final and praised Sadio Mané for persuading his teammates to finish the match. He argued that CAF should have halted the game immediately to make its ruling rather than let Senegal win on the pitch and change the result later. While commending Morocco’s organisation and stadiums, Ighalo called the trophy award “foul play.” He warned that the verdict gives critics more ammunition to disparage Africa’s premier tournament.

Do you think Senegal should accept the CAF decision or push back against the late trophy reassignment?

Challenging CAF could harm Senegal's reputation more than accepting this late decision.

It seems odd that CAF would award the trophy months later, opening serious questions about transparency and governance in African football.

Clubs and national teams should document all match processes thoroughly to demand accountability when retrospective rulings threaten competition fairness.
