Senate Amends Rules to Bar Fresh Senators from Principal Roles
The Nigerian Senate has changed its standing rules to prevent newly elected senators from contesting for presiding and principal officer positions in the 11th National Assembly. Deputy Senate Leader Sen. Lola Ashiru moved the amendment after a closed-door session at Tuesday’s plenary. The changes affect Order 4 and introduce a new Order 5. Under the revised Order 4, nominations for presiding officers follow a strict ranking: former presidents, former deputy presidents, former principal officers, senators with at least one four-year term, former House members and, only when all others are unavailable, first-time senators. The new Order 5 specifies that a senator must have served two consecutive terms to qualify for any principal office. This bars those who were not in both the 9th and 10th Senate from competing for leadership roles.
