Edo NLC Declares May Day a Day of Mourning, Rejects Government-Backed Festivities
On the eve of May Day 2026, the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress announced it will not take part in the state-organized celebration at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. It described the event as a “fake celebration” engineered by impostors and political collaborators to undermine independent trade unionism. The statement condemned compulsory attendance orders, state-funded transportation and threats of sanctions for defaulters. It urged all workers to stay home in silent mourning to draw attention to the current labour crisis in Edo State. The Caretaker Committee pledged to continue resisting undue government interference and to restore legitimate leadership to the Edo NLC. Drawing inspiration from labour icons like Pa Michael Imoudu and Adams Oshiomhole, it called on every true worker to unite until the union’s independence is fully reclaimed.
