OAU’s 65th Anniversary: Barrister Ismail Baiyewunmi Honoured Among 65 Distinguished Alumni

Obafemi Awolowo University marked its 65th anniversary with a week-long celebration under the theme “Legacy of Excellence, Future of Impact.” The event featured research exhibitions, cultural displays, alumni homecoming gatherings and special lectures. A highlight was the awards ceremony recognising 65 alumni and supporters for their leadership in education, public service and entrepreneurship. Barrister Ismail Baiyewunmi received a special award for his professional achievements and commitment to societal development. Other honourees included Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe for leadership in healthcare, Prof. Morufu Ademola Adeleke for contributions to mathematics education, and Mrs. Abiola Adelana for her impact in tourism and creative business. The Vice-Chancellor described the anniversary as a celebration of six and a half decades of academic distinction and cultural heritage. The honours serve to inspire current students and reinforce OAU’s motto: “For Learning and Culture.”

Did the alumni tribute to Baiyewunmi catch your attention more than the cultural showcases or research booths?

It's impressive to see cultural displays alongside research showcases, but I wonder if the event truly reflected OAU's future impact goals or just past glories.

Celebrating alumni achievements is fine, but shouldn't the focus be on current students' needs and opportunities rather than past honors?

Perhaps OAU can leverage alumni homecoming to launch mentorship programs, pairing recent graduates with experienced alumni for career guidance and research collaboration.
