Governors Push for Expanded State Police Powers and Funding
State Attorneys-General, legal experts and senior security officials met in Abuja to harmonise a framework for State Police Services. They outlined proposals on operational powers, personnel management, oversight and the relationship between federal and state forces. The meeting report calls for constitutional recognition of governors’ roles in coordinating security in their states. It also recommends guaranteed funding arrangements, transitional federal support and State Security Trust Funds to ensure predictable resources. Under the proposed model, the Federal Police Service would handle national crimes while State Police Services tackle local offences. Plans include transfer mechanisms for existing infrastructure and voluntary transfer options for federal officers. These recommendations feed into current constitutional amendment efforts, following recent House and Senate approval of bills to create a dual policing structure. Advocates see this as a major reform to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
