Enugu Launches NG-CARES Phase to Support 3,000 Rural Households

Enugu Launches NG-CARES Phase to Support 3,000 Rural Households — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Enugu State has begun a new phase of its NG-CARES social programme to reach at least 3,000 rural beneficiaries. The Community and Social Development Agency will install solar-powered water points, build hygienic sanitation facilities, and provide tools for small businesses. Eligible residents will receive POS machines and vocational equipment for trades like tailoring and hairdressing. Selection will follow a transparent process using community input and the state’s social register. Local authorities will help monitor progress and ensure the initiative remains free from political influence. Implementation will roll out in phases: community sensitisation, beneficiary selection, distribution of support items, and ongoing impact tracking.

How will the program ensure all 3,000 households actually get access to those solar-powered water points and sanitation?

This sounds promising, but similar projects in other states struggled with maintenance and oversight after initial installation.

I'm not convinced rural entrepreneurs need new tools when local markets can't absorb more products.

Local coordinators should train community members on equipment upkeep and involve them in sanitation planning for lasting impact.
