‘It Was a Contract Dispute, Not Censorship’ — Okediji on OAU Ifa Lecture Cancellation
Moyo Okediji, Professor of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, says his planned lecture on Ifa at Obafemi Awolowo University was cancelled over unresolved book contract issues, not its content. He explained that the event was to coincide with the launch of his new book, Sixteen Sacred Stanzas of Ifa Tuntun. After meeting with OAU officials, he praised the university’s commitment to academic freedom and the safety of its community, especially after he received credible threats before the event. Okediji added that respected traditional leaders were eager to attend and that OAU remains willing to host the lecture. He also revealed that the first volume of his book will now appear under a different imprint while discussions continue on the remaining volumes.
