US House Moves to Withhold All Aid Over Nigeria’s Ongoing Terrorism Crisis

US House Moves to Withhold All Aid Over Nigeria’s Ongoing Terrorism Crisis

The US House of Representatives has approved an amendment to suspend 100% of assistance to Nigeria until its government takes decisive action against terrorism and violent attacks. Florida Republican Gregory Steube led the push, arguing that withholding only half of the funds rewards inaction despite rising attacks on Christians and other minorities. He said American taxpayers shouldn’t fund governments that fail basic security and religious-freedom obligations. The amendment still needs to clear the rest of the legislative process before the funding cut can take effect.

When you mention cutting aid, are you most concerned about military logistics or civilian support?

It's interesting that lawmakers opted for a full suspension rather than a partial cut after prior calls to restrict only half the funding.

Wouldn't it be more effective to support targeted counterterrorism programs instead of a sweeping funding freeze that could stall essential security operations?

Perhaps Nigerian authorities can use this pause to accelerate reforms, coordinate with regional partners, and demonstrate clear progress against extremist groups.
