OAU Medical Student Collapses and Dies Moments Before Final Exam

OAU Medical Student Collapses and Dies Moments Before Final Exam — 1 of 3
1 / 3

A 400-level medical student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Adewole Emmanuel, collapsed and died just before his final semester examination. His passing was confirmed by the Ife University Medical Students Association on April 22. IFUMSA described him as a dedicated classmate and a rising star aiming to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. They asked the public to respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation during this difficult time. Fellow students have raised concerns that the ambulance which arrived lacked a stretcher and oxygen, and that there was no working defibrillator nearby. This tragic incident highlights serious gaps in basic life-saving infrastructure for those training to save lives. Many are calling on OAU authorities and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to investigate and address these failings so that future healthcare professionals receive the protection they need.

It's concerning that someone so dedicated still lacked visible support right before such a critical exam. The gap in student welfare is clear.

While awareness is rising, I doubt a few seminars will prevent such tragedies without real changes to exam schedules and workloads.

Universities should implement mandatory stress checks and peer support groups in all faculties to catch emergencies before they escalate.
