Fake Passenger in Ibadan Steals Driver’s Toyota, Sells It for N700,000

Fake Passenger in Ibadan Steals Driver’s Toyota, Sells It for N700,000

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 60-year-old man and two accomplices for allegedly stealing and reselling a Toyota Carina E in Ibadan. The principal suspect posed as a passenger and convinced the driver to wait behind while he “shopped” for spare parts. After the driver left the vehicle with a small shaft purchase, an accomplice removed the car from the market. Investigators later traced the repainted car to Akure in Ondo State, where it had been sold twice—for N700,000 and then N800,000. Police recovered the stripped vehicle along with its engine and gearbox at a spare parts market in Akure. All three suspects confessed and will be charged in court. Authorities remain on the hunt for additional members of the network. The Commissioner of Police praised the intelligence-led operation and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to help curb crime.

How could a seasoned driver forget to verify a passenger's identity before handing over his car keys in broad daylight?

How exactly the driver didn't ask for ID or confirmation before handing over his keys?

It seems odd that a 60-year-old suspect would handle the entire sale as easily without raising suspicion among buyers or other sellers.

I'm not convinced every driver can prevent such a theft just by checking passenger details, sometimes quick thinking might not be enough.

Always snap a quick photo of your passenger's ID or vehicle details before starting the trip, e go help you track developments later.
