NDLEA Cracks Down: Two Grandfathers Arrested for Selling Drugs to Students, Major Busts Across Nigeria

NDLEA Cracks Down: Two Grandfathers Arrested for Selling Drugs to Students, Major Busts Across Nigeria

The NDLEA has arrested two elderly men aged 84 and 75 in Umuahia for allegedly supplying opioids to secondary school students. Officers seized 4.64kg of tramadol and diazepam from a medicine store and intercepted another supply at Saint Silas Secondary School. Investigators say one suspect sold drugs to a 15-year-old pupil, who confessed to consuming and distributing the substances. The agency has enrolled the affected students in counselling and rehabilitation programmes while preparing charges against the suspects. Beyond Abia State, NDLEA operatives intercepted 9.5kg of a new synthetic cannabinoid at a Lagos courier depot. Raids in Lagos Island, Ogombo and Kogi led to arrests and recovered codeine syrup, skunk and methamphetamine hidden in everyday items. In Ekiti, Oyo and Edo states, officers destroyed tonnes of cannabis and arrested wanted dealers. NDLEA’s Chairman praised the balance between aggressive seizures and public enlightenment under the ongoing War Against Drug Abuse campaign.

What do you think triggered NDLEA to focus on elderly drug suppliers targeting schools now?

Absolutely. Elderly suppliers targeting schoolchildren demand urgent attention, so NDLEA had to move on that.

It's odd that two grandfathers aged 84 and 75 were running such an operation so close to students.

I'm not convinced this crackdown addresses the root problem of student drug access across Nigeria schools.

Schools should partner with community leaders and health experts for regular screenings and prevention programs around drug abuse.
