1 / 12

The final round of qualifiers has seen some of football’s brightest talents watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup from home. Italy’s hero Gianluigi Donnarumma and defensive pillars like Alessandro Bastoni and Riccardo Calafiori will be absent after the Azzurri failed to qualify. Nigeria’s Super Eagles also fell short, leaving Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina sidelined following their play-off defeat to DR Congo. Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai and Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among other standout players who won’t feature. Pulse Sports presents the best XI set to miss the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Their absence leaves a notable talent gap in what promises to be a thrilling World Cup.

I'm not sure removing a couple of stars will dent the tournament's hype; World Cup always delivers top action anyway.

E no easy to imagine Italy coping without Donnarumma or Bastoni at the finals, even if their group was fiercely competitive.

Maybe big names missing actually opens room for underrated players to shine, not necessarily a disaster for overall tournament appeal.

Fans and analysts should track emerging talents taking those vacant spots as fresh dark horses to watch in next World Cup cycle.
