500,000 Yache Residents Demand Urgent Power Restoration in Cross River

Over half a million people in Yache communities of Yala LGA, Cross River State have appealed to the South-South Development Commission for an immediate return of electricity. A formal letter from the Cross River State Commissioner for Education details how years of neglect have left residents without power, good roads or safe drinking water. The letter notes that Yache ward spans six communities bordering Benue State and supports the state with a variety of agricultural produce. It also highlights the area’s political significance, citing 33 polling units and over 23,000 voters who consistently back the current administration. Amid growing calls for rural infrastructure development, community leaders say restoring power would spur social and economic progress and strengthen food security across the region.

Relying solely on official appeals may delay progress; local groups could organise alternative mini-grids instead of waiting passively for government intervention.

Community leaders should map critical facilities like clinics and schools, then prioritise mini-grid pilot projects funded through local partnerships for immediate relief.
