PCOS Officially Renamed PMOS to Reflect Its Hormonal and Metabolic Impact
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has been rebranded as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome after decades of calls for a name that better captures its full scope. A recent global survey found that 85.6% of patients and 76.1% of health professionals supported the change. Critics say the old term overemphasised ovarian cysts, even though many people with the condition don’t develop true cysts. The new name highlights the interplay of multiple hormonal systems and metabolic factors such as insulin resistance, weight regulation, skin and cardiovascular issues alongside reproductive effects. Experts believe adopting PMOS will improve diagnosis, treatment approaches and public understanding of the disorder. While updating medical literature and patient resources may take time, the shift marks a significant step toward more accurate and inclusive women’s healthcare language.
