83% of Nigerians Back Raising Social Media Age Limit for Children – FG Survey
A recent federal survey found that 83.4% of Nigerians support regulating children’s access to social media, with 64.5% favouring a minimum age of 16 or 17 years instead of the global norm of 13. The poll of 585 respondents revealed high concern about online risks: 90.9% cited harmful content, 83.6% pointed to digital addiction and 82.4% feared grooming. Nearly 94% of participants expressed extreme or high anxiety over child safety on social platforms. Over 97% back a duty-of-care framework for proactive platform safeguards. Officials at a Lagos roundtable highlighted the need for updated laws, better age verification and stronger digital literacy programmes to protect Nigerian children online.
