Edo State to Deploy 1,000 Forest Guards Against Kidnappers and Protect Farmlands

Edo State Government has launched the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards. This initiative aims to protect forests, farmlands and rural communities from kidnappers and other criminals. The Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Hon. Festus Ebea, said 500 guards are already in place. Another 500 will join soon following a directive from the National Security Adviser. The guards will be based deep in forest reserves and along border corridors with Kogi, Ondo and Delta states. Special focus areas include Akoko-Edo, Etsako East and Etsako West due to recent security challenges. Other officials highlighted efforts to boost security and economic activity. Investments in Udomi, including a military barracks and health schools, aim to deter crime. The state transport fleet also grew to 150 buses, with 50 CNG-powered units to improve mobility.

Which parts of Edo State should these forest guards prioritize for patrol against kidnappers and farmland threats?

Absolutely! Hitting those forest edges near farming villages first will keep both crops and families safer under this plan.

Increasing to 1,000 guards sounds good, but without clear deployment zones and patrol routines, gaps in rural security may persist.

I no sure say 1,000 guards alone go make any difference; na proper community engagement and intelligence gathering matter pass sheer numbers.

Pairing new forest guards with community liaison officers could improve intelligence flow and help guard deployment align with real-time threats.
