NCAA Grounds American Pilot After Runway Mix-Up at Asaba Airport

NCAA Grounds American Pilot After Runway Mix-Up at Asaba Airport

Nigeria’s aviation regulator has banned an American pilot from flying in the country after a Bombardier Challenger 601-3A mistakenly landed on an unfinished roadway at Asaba Airport on June 10, 2026. The NCAA has also suspended the aircraft’s First Officer and grounded the jet. This action follows an initial safety report by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and the start of a separate regulatory review by the NCAA. Captain Chris Najomo, Director-General of the NCAA, said the Department of State Services has been brought in due to the incident’s seriousness. He assured the public of a transparent probe and promised action once the investigation concludes. Speaking at the Airport Business Summit in Lagos, Najomo highlighted plans to tackle monopoly and anti-competitive practices in Nigeria’s aviation sector. He reiterated the regulator’s commitment to passenger safety and fair competition.

Banning the pilot seems harsh if the ground crews failed to update runway conditions promptly. Shared responsibility deserves more balanced scrutiny.
