Northern Light: Zahra’s Race to Save Her Family in MTV Shuga’s New Short

Northern Light: Zahra’s Race to Save Her Family in MTV Shuga’s New Short

Zahra has just four days to pitch her community fem-tech app or agree to marriage. She’s an 18-year-old coding prodigy whose mother is critically ill and whose brother’s gambling has wiped out their family income. Her app, Jikon Mata, aims to help women pool resources and access healthcare together. Zahra negotiates a brief window to present her idea. But on the day of the pitch, her mother collapses and everything she’s worked for threatens to unravel. Starring Miracle Ada Inyanda and Ismail Khalid, Northern Light is directed by Adejo ‘Storypriest’ Emmanuel with a script by Victoria Ogunwemimo and Nwibe Ifechi. Part of MTV Shuga’s youth-driven film lab, it shines a light on the financial exclusion many Nigerian women face.

It's striking how Zahra's four-day deadline and her brother's gambling losses heighten the urgency around launching Jikon Mata.

I get the urgency, but asking someone to ditch marriage plans for an app pitch feels a bit unrealistic.

Maybe the show could follow up with resources on starting community saving groups, showing viewers how to launch something like Jikon Mata locally.
