The Silent Killer: Why Hypertension Strikes Without Warning
Hypertension affects nearly one in three Nigerian adults. Yet many believe “if you don’t look, you won’t find” – a dangerous myth. High blood pressure can develop silently and quietly damage organs before you notice any signs. Blood pressure at or above 140/90 mmHg is considered hypertension. This lifelong condition forces blood to push too hard against artery walls. Early on, you may have no obvious symptoms. When they appear – headaches, vision changes, heart palpitations or sleep problems – complications may already be occurring. Most cases have no clear cause, though family history, diabetes, kidney or thyroid issues, certain medications and lifestyle factors can raise your risk. Regular checks, at least once every two weeks, are the only way to know if your readings are safe. Managing hypertension means daily medicines for life and healthy habits: reduce salt, eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise, prioritise sleep, and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol. With good control, you can prevent strokes, heart disease, kidney damage and other severe outcomes.
