IATA Flags Nigeria as One of the World’s Costliest for Airline Operations

IATA Flags Nigeria as One of the World’s Costliest for Airline Operations

The International Air Transport Association has named Nigeria among the most expensive countries globally to operate an airline. Excessive taxes, charges and other operational costs are squeezing local carriers and constraining their growth. At IATA’s annual gathering, Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Al-Awadhi, noted that despite sector reforms by the aviation ministry, Nigerian airlines still face steep cost pressures that undermine their competitiveness and profitability. IATA has called on ECOWAS nations to cut aviation taxes and fees by 25 per cent. Stakeholders say this move would reduce ticket costs, boost passenger traffic and enhance regional connectivity, supporting trade, tourism and broader economic development.
