My First Day at Kuje Correctional Centre: Confronting Nigeria’s Forgotten Youth

My First Day at Kuje Correctional Centre: Confronting Nigeria’s Forgotten Youth

My first step into Kuje Correctional Centre was more than just a physical movement. It exposed me to a side of Nigeria that many never see. I joined a charity outreach organised by the Knights of St. Mulumba. During the Holy Mass I saw faces aged 18 to 30, and a few older men who had spent nearly a decade behind bars. Most offences were petty—acts born of impulse, poverty or circumstance. Yet many detainees await trial for years, serving a silent punishment before judgment. I recognise the federal investment in infrastructure, but timely justice and true rehabilitation must follow. Behind those walls are Nigerians whose stories demand our attention and compassion.

I agree, it's eye-opening how hopeful they stayed despite hard conditions.

Could you clarify which particular reaction from the inmates caught you off guard during that first day?

It's interesting that visitors only saw inmates aged 18 to 30, ignoring older men who might share similar struggles.

I'm not convinced a single outreach visit can truly shift public perception about incarcerated youth in Nigeria.

Partnering with local rehabilitative programs could extend support beyond mass attendance and foster lasting change for those youths.
