FG Spends Just 5% of N54.93tn Road Budget Over Three Years
The Federal Government budgeted N54.93tn for road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance between 2023 and April 2026 but released only N2.68tn. In 2023, N2.53tn was allocated to roads but just N631.51bn (25%) was released. In 2024, the budget rose to N9.39tn with N784.60bn (8%) released. In 2025, N7.22tn was approved and N670.68bn (9%) was disbursed. For 2026, N35.79tn was earmarked but only N597.08bn (1.7%) had been released by April. Construction projects attract the largest allocations but see the lowest implementation rates. The shortfall highlights persistent financing constraints facing major highways like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road. The Works Minister says over 2,000 projects were inherited and contractors are owed about N2.2tn.
