Yakubu Mohammed’s Quiet Revolution in Nigerian Journalism
From a childhood gift of a qalam (pen), Yakubu Mohammed chose journalism and shaped it with discipline and purpose. He built his career step by step—from campus radio at UNILAG and Kaduna broadcasts to rising star at New Nigerian newspapers and co-founding the trail-blazing Newswatch. Unlike many in his field, he shunned showmanship. He let his reporting and integrity speak for him. His dignified presence and refusal to chase fame earned respect from peers, leaders and readers alike. He taught us to work hard, stay focused, dress well and master our craft. He believed knowledge, responsibility and confidence make a journalist truly influential, not sensationalism or intrusion. His legacy of simplicity, integrity and bold content remains evergreen. Journalism today still benefits from the standards he set and the example he left behind.
