US State Department Launches $3.5m Grant to Track Religious Freedom Abuses in Nigeria

US State Department Launches $3.5m Grant to Track Religious Freedom Abuses in Nigeria

The US State Department has opened a $3.5 million grant competition to strengthen the monitoring and reporting of religious freedom violations in Nigeria. Managed by the Office of International Religious Freedom under the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, the programme will fund one award over 24 to 48 months. It seeks organisations that document attacks by Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa, Fulani militias and other armed groups against Christians and Muslims. Civil society and survivor reports highlight slow official responses to faith-based violence and credible accounts of security forces raiding places of worship. This initiative follows Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious rights abuses. Applicants—especially non-profits—should focus on at least four states in the Middle Belt. The competition closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on July 9, 2026.

Absolutely, knowing how the grant will strengthen local reporting networks and verify incidents is vital for accountability.

Several similar programs have started big but yielded little change on the ground in past years.

Is this just foreign money chasing headlines, or genuine support for local voices wey dey push for real change?

We could partner with community groups to train monitors on the ground, ensuring timely and credible documentation of incidents.
