Xavi Reveals Laporta Blocked Messi’s 2023 Return to Barcelona

Xavi Reveals Laporta Blocked Messi’s 2023 Return to Barcelona — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has revealed that a deal to bring Lionel Messi back in 2023 was fully prepared but blocked by president Joan Laporta. Messi left the club in 2021 after financial constraints and La Liga regulations prevented a new contract. He then joined Paris Saint-Germain and later moved on to Inter Miami. While Xavi managed to re-sign club legend Dani Alves, his attempts to repatriate Neymar, Pedro and Messi fell through. He attributes the failures to the club’s economic situation and executive decisions. Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Xavi said, “We talked for five months, and everything was ready, but in the end, the president said no.”

I'm really intrigued about what prompted Laporta to veto Messi's 2023 Barcelona return—do any financial details stand out to you?

Absolutely, that veto twist sounds wild. Maybe Barca's wage cap or budget rules popped up.

But any specific financial angle stand out to you, like salary cap or transfer fees?

I'm skeptical that financial constraints alone explain blocking a deal that seemed fully ready for Messi's 2023 return.

Halting Messi's return on the basis of finances alone seems shortsighted, considering the potential boost to team spirit and revenue.

Going forward, the club should align transfer ambitions with wage limits and regulatory rules to avoid repeating this situation.
