Umahi: Flooding on Coastal Highway Designed for Future Rail Project

Umahi: Flooding on Coastal Highway Designed for Future Rail Project

The Minister of Works says water pooling on parts of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is intentional. The 25-metre-wide median was reserved for a future railway line, so sections remain wet until rail works begin. During an inspection of Sections One and Two, he assured Nigerians that Section One (47km) is complete ahead of schedule and Section Two (55km) will be substantially finished by November. He also outlined progress on Sections Three and Four across Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states. Umahi praised Hitech Construction for advancing work despite delayed payments and confirmed that drainage fixes are underway in low-lying areas. He reiterated the government’s commitment to deliver all four legacy road projects by 2031 and urged continued public support.

Do you think purposely leaving parts of the Coastal Highway flooded makes sense for a future rail project?

What proof suggests they're deliberately flooding the highway to build rail tracks later?

It's odd that a major highway would stay waterlogged long before any rail construction even starts.

Sure, they say it's intentional, but leaving motorists stranded in flooded sections seems like poor planning.

Authorities could set up temporary drainage channels to ease traffic until work on the railway median begins.
