How to Stand for UK Parliament with Just £500 Deposit

In the UK, anyone aged 18 or over and holding British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizenship can run for Parliament. To get on the ballot, you submit nomination forms and a £500 deposit before the nomination deadline. If you secure more than 5% of valid votes in your constituency, your deposit is refunded the next working day after results are declared. Otherwise, you forfeit the £500. Certain groups cannot stand, including police officers, armed forces members, civil servants, judges, and people under specific bankruptcy or debt restrictions. Every candidate must also appoint an election agent to manage campaign finances and legal compliance.

I'm curious what sparked your interest in standing for Parliament despite the minimal deposit requirement?

The £500 deposit seems modest, but it could still be a barrier for grassroots candidates without major funding.

I'm not convinced the deposit is the real challenge when campaign logistics and outreach costs can quickly spiral out of control.

Map out a timeline to complete nomination forms, gather your paperwork, and secure the £500 deposit well before the deadline.
