Why Igbos Should View Federal Allocations as Biafra Reparations
Some Southeastern Nigerians argue that federal representation and allocations already serve as reparations for Biafra. Igbos hold five governors and 15 senators for 19 million people. In contrast, Lagos and Kano with larger populations each have one governor and three senators. The same formula applies when sharing federal funds among states and local governments. Both sides committed wartime wrongs. But the extra political power and benefits enjoyed by Igbos today can be seen as compensation. This advantage should count as reparations until true equity is achieved.
