MAPOLY Summit: Akinwande Challenges Youth to Shape Laws and Lead Change

MAPOLY Summit: Akinwande Challenges Youth to Shape Laws and Lead Change — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Ajibola Akinwande, a NIESV member and MAPOLY alumnus, spoke at the Students’ Legislative Summit in Abeokuta. He urged young Nigerians to move beyond voting and take active roles in lawmaking and policy debates. Under the theme “Youth as Catalysts for Change,” he explained that legislation is more than passing laws. It solves problems, holds leaders accountable and protects public resources. He noted that youth can influence education, housing, taxation and the digital economy through civic engagement. He outlined five steps: learn the legislative process, engage beyond elections, hold officials accountable, build policy skills and prepare for leadership with integrity. Drawing on his own rise from student leader to estate surveyor and real estate manager, he stressed that integrity and preparation unlock opportunity. Akinwande reminded students that democracy does not end on election day. He encouraged them to see themselves as future lawmakers who can shape Nigeria’s policies and drive positive change.

Interesting call for youth to lead change, yet history shows many promising summits lack real follow-through.

I'm not convinced that speeches alone will shift power dynamics without local community groups organizing effectively.

Start by joining or forming local student caucuses to draft policy proposals and engage lawmakers directly on campus.
