Klopp Slams Van der Vaart’s “Boeing 747” Slur, Backs Van Dijk After Sweden Rout

Klopp Slams Van der Vaart’s “Boeing 747” Slur, Backs Van Dijk After Sweden Rout — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Jurgen Klopp has come out swinging in defence of Virgil van Dijk after former Netherlands star Rafael van der Vaart likened the defender’s turning to a “Boeing 747”. Van der Vaart made the comment following the Dutch draw with Japan, questioning the captain’s mobility on the pitch. Van Dijk, though, proved his critics wrong in the next match as the Netherlands thrashed Sweden 5-1. Speaking as a pundit, Klopp’s former Liverpool manager was blunt about the critique. He suggested van der Vaart’s remarks were more about grabbing headlines than offering real insight. Klopp ended by reaffirming his belief that Van Dijk remains one of the world’s best centre-backs, regardless of colourful commentary.

It seems excessive to dismiss every defensive turn as a Boeing 747 manoeuvre, even if Van Dijk isn't quite at peak agility anymore.

Focusing training on quick footwork and positioning drills might help Van Dijk regain sharpness without dragging slights into the spotlight.
