Nigeria, UN Partner to Resolve Peacekeeping Legacy Claims and Strengthen Humanitarian Law
The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international humanitarian law and strict human rights standards in all military operations. He made the pledge during a working visit by UN Assistant Secretary-General and Victims’ Rights Advocate Ms. Najla Palma. They reviewed frameworks to address 42 legacy paternity claims from past peacekeeping missions in Liberia and noted some applicants have sought Nigerian citizenship. Both parties agreed to institutionalise their collaboration through specialised training, joint workshops, and advanced capacity-building initiatives. The partnership aims to fully embed human rights protection into the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s operational doctrine.
