Nigeria Demands Urgent Action Over Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned recent threats against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa. Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said some groups have urged black migrants to leave the country, heightening anxiety within the Nigerian community. Ebienfa spoke in Abuja after a meeting between Permanent Secretary Dunoma Ahmed and South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner Lesoli Machele. They discussed violent incidents, including the deaths of Matthew Ekpenyong and Kelvin Amaramiro, both allegedly involving security personnel. Nigeria demands transparent investigations, access to autopsy reports, and regular updates on both cases. The ministry also called for legal support for the victims’ families and disciplinary action where misconduct by security agents is confirmed. Permanent Secretary Ahmed urged South African authorities to protect lawfully resident Nigerians, prevent incitement by groups like Jacinta Zuma and Operation Dudula, and activate the early warning mechanism whenever threats emerge.
