IG Disu Denies Police Delaying State Police Creation, Urges Community Support

IG Disu Denies Police Delaying State Police Creation, Urges Community Support

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has rejected claims that the Nigeria Police Force is to blame for delays in setting up state police. Speaking at a security stakeholders meeting in Awka, Anambra State, Disu explained that only the National and State Assemblies can amend the constitution to create state forces. He added that two-thirds of state assemblies must approve any changes proposed by the National Assembly. Disu called on traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society groups and the private sector to share timely information on criminal activity. He said stronger collaboration at the grassroots would boost national security. Anambra’s Police Commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, praised joint efforts with local vigilance groups for reducing crime. Stakeholders urged faster federal action on the state police bill and better training, equipment and welfare for security agencies.

It's interesting that Disu emphasizes legislative responsibility, yet doesn't address why assemblies haven't prioritized the state police bill sooner.

I'm not convinced that community meetings alone will push lawmakers. There must be extra political incentives or public pressure tactics involved.

Local groups could draft clear proposals and share them with assembly members, ensuring community voices stay central to the state police debate.
