‘We Backed Off Too Soon’ – Pape Thiaw on Senegal’s 2-0 Lead Collapse vs Belgium

‘We Backed Off Too Soon’ – Pape Thiaw on Senegal’s 2-0 Lead Collapse vs Belgium — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Senegal’s coach Pape Thiaw admits their strategy to protect a 2-0 lead backfired in their World Cup match against Belgium. Despite early goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, the team retreated too far. Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans seized momentum late in the game. Tielemans’ VAR-awarded penalty in stoppage time forced extra time and sent the Red Devils through. Thiaw reflected on the exit, saying he tried to rejuvenate his players but they couldn’t regain control. “Once we conceded the first goal, we retreated even more, and they scored again,” he explained.

Next time Senegal should consider a balanced midfield press instead of full retreat to maintain control and keep Belgium off the ball.
