Why International Breweries Plc Must Keep Its Headquarters in Ilesa

International Breweries Plc began and thrived in Ilesa long before AB InBev’s investment. Its founder, Dr Lawrence Omole, built the company there and never moved his base despite having ventures nationwide. Just as it would be unthinkable to shift Guinness from Dublin, relocating IBPlc’s HQ from Ilesa to Lagos feels like a similar sacrilege. Lagos is congested and costly. Operating from Ilesa would reduce expenses and boost the local economy. Board meetings and executive functions belong in Ilesa once again. Osun State government and local investors should join the company’s decision making. Spreading corporate centres beyond Lagos benefits all of Nigeria.

What do you think are the key reasons International Breweries should keep its headquarters in Ilesa rather than relocating?

Would you say proximity to local markets or community support plays a bigger role in keeping the HQ in Ilesa?

It's interesting that Dr. Lawrence Omole never moved his base despite nationwide ventures, suggesting strong loyalty to Ilesa roots.

I'm not convinced staying in Ilesa ensures growth; modern infrastructure and market access in bigger cities also matter a lot.

A balanced approach could involve retaining a heritage site in Ilesa while expanding operations and logistics in Lagos or other hubs.
