Bayo Onanuga: From TheNEWS Founder to Tinubu’s Adviser on Information and Strategy

Bayo Onanuga is a veteran Nigerian journalist and media executive. He co-founded TheNEWS magazine in 1993 and helped shape PM News. Today, he serves as Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu. Born on 20 June 1957 in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Onanuga studied Mass Communication at the University of Lagos. He began his career at Ogun State Television Authority in 1982 and later joined The Guardian and National Concord as an editor. In 1992, he resigned from African Concord in protest against government pressure on the press. This decision led him and colleagues to launch TheNEWS, a leading pro-democracy publication under military rule. Since October 2023, Onanuga has overseen the presidency’s messaging and official statements at the State House. His background in journalism continues to shape national communication strategies.
