Maduka Okoye has explained why he declined an invitation to play at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The 26-year-old goalkeeper said he needed to focus on regaining his fitness after serving a suspension for an alleged betting scandal. Okoye added that staying with Udinese would help him work on his form and show gratitude for the club’s support during a difficult period. He has since been named in Nigeria’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan.

It's interesting he stepped back after that suspension, but is sitting out a major tournament truly the best way to rebuild form?

Perhaps focusing on a tailored training program with Udinese's staff now will help him return stronger for future tournaments.
