Mid-Year Launch: FG to Unveil New Cotton and Textile Policy to Revive Industry
The Federal Government will unveil a strategic policy framework for Nigeria’s cotton, textile and garment sector between June and July. Minister of State for Industry Sen. John Enoh made the announcement at a CTG Value Chain Activation event in Abuja. The framework aims to set broad guidelines and attract local and foreign investments. Pilots show cotton can be planted, processed and transformed into finished garments in six to seven months. Locally produced T-shirts were found to be better in quality and pricing than imports. The initiative involved stakeholders across cotton production, textile manufacturing and garment making. The Bank of Agriculture plans to finance smallholder cotton farmers through a dedicated fund, focusing on improved seeds, fertiliser and technology-driven farming. Private firms like Onchek Ltd. have begun local textile production, making about 8,000 shirts daily. The venture created jobs, reduced foreign exchange pressure and secured orders for 200,000 shirts as production scales up.
