Katsina Stakeholders Demand Tougher Action to End Conflict-Related Sexual Violence
At a policy dialogue marking the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, humanitarian and security actors in Katsina urged urgent measures to tackle sexual abuse linked to banditry. They called for the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act and increased funding for survivor services. Miss Hajara Yusuf of the Katsina Ministry of Women Affairs highlighted rising cases of rape, abduction, forced marriage and weak access to justice in displacement camps. She said survivors must receive better medical, legal and psychosocial support. Mr Lawal Alhassan from the Ministry of Internal Security explained plans for intelligence-led operations and community policing to protect vulnerable communities. Maimuna Musa-Gani of the International Federation of Women Lawyers also pressed for free legal aid for survivors. Sabo Abdulkadeer of the sPRiNG programme reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to peacebuilding. Participants recommended stronger agency coordination, more awareness campaigns and improved funding for Sexual Assault Referral Centres.
