Omokri Warns Davido’s Publicity for Abducted Oyo Pupils May Fuel Terrorists
Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has criticised Davido’s use of global attention in calling for the release of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State. He argues that widespread publicity can strengthen armed groups rather than pressure them into freeing hostages. Omokri cited examples such as the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and the case of Leah Sharibu. He warned that high-profile advocacy can increase victims’ value to kidnappers and amplify fear instead of securing rescues. He quoted former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, saying “publicity is the oxygen of terrorism,” and urged caution in global campaigns. He added that Nigeria’s security agencies remain committed to ongoing rescue operations for the pupils and teachers still held captive. Omokri made these remarks in a detailed statement on social media, stressing the need for strategic interventions that do not inadvertently empower terrorists.
