FCT High Court Dismisses Sadiya Umar Farouq’s Bid to Quash Arrest Warrant

On June 15, 2026, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the FCT High Court in Abuja refused a former minister’s request to set aside a bench warrant. The warrant was issued after Sadiya Umar Farouq failed to appear in court. Farouq and two co-defendants face EFCC charges of criminal conspiracy, abuse of office and diversion of public funds totaling $1.3 million and ₦746.7 million. The court found no valid medical reason to excuse her absence. Prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs SAN urged the court to enforce a previous undertaking to produce the defendant. Defence counsel A.M. Lawal secured permission for senior counsel A.A. Ibrahim SAN to appear on the next date. The case was adjourned to July 2, 2026, for arraignment.

I agree, this ruling likely maintains pressure on her reputation and shapes how EFCC approaches her case in Abuja moving forward.

Justice Onwuegbuzie's swift refusal suggests the court is firm on appearance rules, but it raises questions about procedural fairness for high-profile defendants.

It seems hasty to criticize the judge; after all, Farouq did fail to appear in court before any quashing could be heard.

Lawyers should double-check court notices and deliver appearance instructions promptly to avoid bench warrants in similar EFCC cases.
