Europe Plans NATO Alliance That Can Operate Independently of the US
Europe is drawing up plans for a European-led NATO capable of operating without US forces. Officials say the move addresses concerns over America’s reliability and recent threats to withdraw from the alliance. The initiative is championed by Finnish President Alexander Stubb and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with support from the UK, France, Sweden and Poland. Europe already fields aircraft carriers, fighter jets and nuclear deterrents but lacks its own satellite surveillance, missile warning systems and intelligence networks. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte predicts a shift toward a more European-led alliance. Several countries are reintroducing conscription, boosting defence production and preparing joint exercises along the Russian border in the Nordic region.
