CAF Launches Bidding to Host AFCON 2028, 2032 and 2036

CAF Launches Bidding to Host AFCON 2028, 2032 and 2036

The Confederation of African Football has opened the bidding process for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. All 54 Member Associations are invited to compete for hosting rights under a framework built with expert advisers to ensure fairness and transparency. CAF worked with independent experts and legal, technical and financial advisers to set standards for world-class events. Bids will be assessed against strict technical, commercial and operational criteria. This announcement follows preparations for the 2027 AFCON, which will be the first to span Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda next June and July. Over recent years, the tournament has drawn record global audiences across broadcast and digital platforms. Successful hosts will have the chance to showcase stadiums, tourism and organisational capacity while welcoming Africa’s top national teams and millions of fans.

It sounds fair on paper, but many smaller associations lack the infrastructure budgets needed to put a competitive bid together for AFCON.

Expert advisers alone won't stop political deals influencing the final host selection, that framework still feels subject to backroom agreements.

Associations aiming to host should start by drafting detailed budget proposals and infrastructure assessments to meet transparency criteria early.
