Inside ADC’s Power Shift: Nafiu Bala at David Mark-Led Leadership Unveiling
In July 2025, Nafiu Bala, acting national chairman of the African Democratic Congress, attended the unveiling of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as interim party leaders at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The event drew senior figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi and Ireti Kingibe. Ralph Nwosu, former ADC national chairman, announced that the party’s NEC and NWC had resigned to allow the Mark-led team to “pedal this canoe” towards Aso Rock. Some members, including ex-candidate Dumebi Kachikwu, opposed the move. In late July, Bala declared himself national chairman and filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the Mark faction from parading as leaders. The Court of Appeal directed all parties to maintain the status quo, and INEC later withdrew recognition of both groups. Attempts to reach Bala for comment on his presence at the unveiling were unsuccessful.
