From Warning to Action: How Nigeria Can Prevent This Year’s Flood Disaster
Nigeria faces another dangerous rainy season. NiMet and NIHSA warn of flash floods across Lagos and 26 states between July and September. Yet history shows we only act after homes and livelihoods are lost. Floods in Nigeria reflect governance failures and poor urban planning. Blocked drains, buildings on waterways and unregulated wetlands worsen every downpour. Emergency teams often arrive only after communities are submerged. Federal, state and local authorities must move beyond warnings. They should clear drains regularly, enforce sanitation laws, establish evacuation centres and improve city drainage. Citizens must also dispose of refuse properly, report illegal developments and follow evacuation directives. Climate change intensifies rains, but good planning and public responsibility can reduce costs and save lives. This year’s alerts must be a national call to prepare, not another archived warning.
